An Overview of Orthobiologics and Platelet Rich Plasma

Modern orthopedic surgery has been influenced by orthobiologics. Focused research has been conducted in many chronic musculoskeletal conditions to gain a better understanding of the roles of different growth factors and cells in tendon healing, ligament repair, and cartilage regeneration.

Researchers have published varying results from clinical and laboratory studies using Orthobiologics such as stem cells, platelet-rich plasma, autologous condition serum, etc. There is no consensus on the best orthobiologic substance or the methods of preparation and use of these substances.

Much of the confusion is due to the fact that studies ranging from RCTs to case reports present variable results, and the interpretations are wide-ranging. We reviewed all available data on orthobiologics with a particular focus on platelet-rich plasma for orthopedic conditions.

Professional and amateur athletes are more likely to sustain injuries from sports. Othobiologics can be used to speed up the healing of broken bones, injured muscles, and tendons, and are derived naturally from the body. These substances include bone grafts and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cells, and autologous and conditioned serum.

Bone grafts act by their osteoinductive, osteoconductive, and osteogenic properties to stimulate new bone formation and have no effect on the healing of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. On the other hand, autologous blood, PRP, and autologous conditioned serum deliver growth factors to the diseased areas to stimulate the repair process.
